CHALLENGE
We often speak about waiting on God as a good discipline, to seek to know Him and to come into His presence; which it is. Having said that its not as easy as it sounds especially when you try it. I don’t say this as a discouragement as if it is something not attainable, but as a reflection on my own endeavours. I am fully convinced that God desires a personal and intimate walk with us, such that we are in regular, almost permanent, communication with Him throughout the day. In fact this is part of His explicit will for us, “I will dwell in them and walk among them”, 2 Corinthians 6:16, “if anyone loves Me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home with him”, John 14:23. God wants relationship with us more than we want it with Him; however when we begin to position ourselves towards God and to put ourselves in the way of His will, desiring this relationship above all else, then the challenges come. It is the dying to self bit that is so hard. I really love God and I’ve sought to know him closely this last 20 years I’ve been a Christian, but what I am learning right now is that the ‘old man’ is still alive and how the natural fleshly part of my life remains strong. We don’t realise how hemmed in we are until we try to go beyond familiar boundaries and constraints and to move on to deeper things. The difficulty is not in finding God, because it is actually Him that finds us, but it is in dealing with ourselves. At each step and stage the natural is challenging and resisting the spiritual; there is a war going on inside our bodies – Galatians 5:17.
